Top 5 places to visit in India in Summer

As the temperature soars in many parts of India, travel enthusiasts may be looking for cooler and greener pastures to repose in. Without much ado, let’s take you through five destinations in the country that beckon you for a pleasant experience. Check them out below:

1. Shimla

One of the most popular hill stations in India, Shimla, is the capital city of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Surrounded by pine-draped forests on the mighty Himalayas, Shimla provides a haven where you can escape the summer heat. Numerous natural and historical attractions await you here, like the Shimla Ridge, Chadwick Falls, Himachal State Museum, Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, and Johnnie’s Wax Museum. You can take a stroll around Mall Road and hop on a shopping spree at Lakkar Bazaar. Don’t miss out on the many trekking trails and camping sites because they truly throw you in nature’s lap.

2. Manali

Consider Manali as the sister city of Shimla in the same state. Located In Kullu Valley, it is known widely for its backpacking and camping destinations. Flanked by the River Beas and dotted by apple orchards, you should definitely head to Manali for a range of activities, such as paragliding, mountaineering, zorbing, zip-lining, and white-water rafting. It’s home to Rohtang Pass, Hampta Pass, Jogini Waterfalls, Bhrigu Lake, and many places of worship. During summer, sightseeing and adventure activities at Solang Valley are a must.

3. Kashmir

Kashmir has been a hot topic for political debates for decades, but all illusions crash when one witnesses the breath-taking beauty of India’s northernmost state. The scenic splendor of snow-capped mountains, innumerable wildlife, warm locales, and stunning handicraft rightfully gives Kashmir the reputation of being the “Paradise on Earth.” A Shikara Ride on the pristine Dal Lake, river rafting, trekking, Gandola rides, and paragliding are some must-do activities around its capital Srinagar.

4. Ooty

If you are looking to escape the heat of Chennai or the hot plains of Tamil Nadu, then head to Ooty. This little mountain town is a sanctuary of lush green forests, snow-tipped peaks, and fresh mountain air. Nestled in the Nilgiris, Ooty is known for its tea plantations and wildlife-rich surroundings. Mudumalai National Park (a tiger reserve), Ooty Botanical Gardens, Deer Park, Kalhatty Waterfalls, Doddabetta Peak, and Mukurthi National Park are a few places you must visit for some memorable moments amidst nature. A ride on the Ooty Toy Train, which runs between Mettupalayam and Ooty through Coonoor, will whisk you away to a different mental space.

5. Wayanad

Last on the list is Wayanad, a gem snuggled in the Western Ghats of Kerala. It’s replete with natural attractions and spice plantations, providing a great retreat for people wanting a break from the common din. The topography is quite varied as you can hike through the dense tropical rain forests and see waterfalls and rocky cliffs, along with a large variety of wildlife. It’s a popular destination for kayaking thanks to its proximity to the splendid Pookot Lake. For spelunkers, Edakkal Caves is where they can immerse in the activity while also beholding the beauty of wall and rock carvings.

  1. There was a really good Channel 4 series Indian Summers about 6, 7 years ago. I can’t remember if the setting was actually called Shimla or something else. Whatever the hill station was called I fell in love with it.

I think the series which had Julie Walters in it was meant to run for 10 series, telling the story of India through to Independence. I was really sorry when it got cancelled after two series. But I still want to go to Shimla one day.

  2. Friends did the Ooty train a few years ago. They said it was one of the highlights of their 3 week tour of India.

  3. I’d only heard of Kashmir. Think I need to brush – up on my Indian orography before I head for Delhi.
